Key Lime Pie Puppy Chow

Nothing says summer road trip like a baggie full of puppy chow. This Key Lime Pie Puppy Chow is the perfect version for heading to the beach!

My new hobby is officially dreaming up different puppy show flavors. When I thought of this Key Lime Pie Puppy Chow version, I knew I had to try it immediately.

This peanut butter-free puppy chow is great for kids with peanut allergies or for anyone who doesn’t like peanut butter! It has a great summery citrus flavor that will have everyone coming back for more. I imagine this in a big tub sitting on a table by the pool, waiting for kids to run by, grab a handful, and continue playing. That IS what summer is all about, isn’t it?

This Key Lime Pie Puppy Chow has everything that your favorite dessert has. Lime juice and zest and graham crackers, along with the usual puppy chow (or Muddy Buddies!) ingredients, Chex.

Let me know in the comments, do you call it puppy chow or muddy buddies, and where are you from? We’ve always called it puppy chow and I’m from Kentucky!

Key Lime Pie Puppy Chow Ingredients and Subs

rice Chex cereal — You can use any of the Chex variations you like!
graham crackers — I use the classic honey, but you’re welcome to use the cinnamon flavor.
white chocolate chips — I’ve not used almond bark or any alternative to white chocolate, but I’m sure it would work just fine. You could even try green candy melts!
unsalted butter — salted is fine if that’s what you have, the extra saltiness probably won’t even be detectable.
lime zest — no need to hunt down key limes, the flavor difference wouldn’t be that noticeable in my opinion, but you’re welcome to try and let me know how it goes!
fresh lime juice – ^^
powdered/confectioners’ sugar – no subs here, I’m afraid!

How to Make

In a large bowl, add the Chex and graham cracker chunks; set aside.

In a 1-quart microwavable bowl, microwave chips, butter, lime juice, and zest uncovered on high for 1 minute; stir—microwave about 30 seconds longer if necessary or until chips are melted. Stir until smooth. Pour mixture over cereal, folding gently with a rubber spatula until evenly coated. Allow the mixture to cool slightly without letting the chocolate harden.

Add the powdered sugar, 1/2 a cup at a time, tossing gently as you go to fully coat. Spread in an even layer on parchment paper or foil to set completely. Store in an airtight container.

Troubleshooting

Why is the powdered sugar absorbing into the puppy chow?

Your white chocolate mixture may have been too hot when you added the confectioners’ sugar. Once it’s cooled, you can add 1/4th cup or so to top it back up.

Tools used

Large bowl and smaller bowl

Rubber spatula

Parchment Paper

Microplane

How to store

If you’ve ever eaten puppy chow on the back seat of a school bus, you’ve probably eaten it right out of a ziplock bag, which is a fair storage solution considering it probably won’t last until you get to your destination. If you’d like to gift it or keep it longer than a couple of days, you can store it in an airtight container for up to 1 week.

Did you know you can freeze puppy chow? For up to 2 months!
