Puttanesca Pizza

This Italian-inspired Puttanesca Pizza is the perfect easy meal for summer patio nights and a glass of rosé.

This post is sponsored by Jus-Rol. As always, thank you for reading and for supporting companies I partner with, which allows me to create unique content and recipes for you from readily accessible ingredients. All opinions are always my own.

I wholeheartedly believe that there are many ways to cut corners in the kitchen that don’t involve sacrificing flavor. In this case, I’m using Jus-Rol pizza dough to save literally hours making pizza dough and featuring some classic Italian flavors for my impressive toppings on this Puttanesca Pizza.

The worst part of making pizza from scratch is dealing with the ball of finicky pizza dough. If you try to roll it out while it’s too cold, it seizes up and you can’t get it to the right size. If it’s too warm… well, it’s just a mess. I love the creativity that I get to have when making my own pizza at home, but I MUCH prefer using the Jus-Rol’s ready-to-bake refrigerated dough for the crust so I can focus my attention elsewhere.

Jus-Rol is unlike any other refrigerated dough you’ve tried. It comes rolled onto baking paper so the cleanup is non-existent! No rolling pin and no extra flour are needed. Just unroll it, top it, and bake. That’s it! It comes in both the Round and Thin variety which I used in this recipe, Family Size, which I love as well, and Flatbread, which is super thin and crispy.

I’ve also used the Jus-Rol Pie Crust and Puff Pastry for a long time as well and they’re so foolproof. Seriously, if you love to cook but hate working with dough, you need to check out Jus-Rol. Not to mention, they use the highest quality non-GMO ingredients, no artificial flavors or colors, no high fructose corn syrup, and no bleached flour. Two very enthusiastic thumbs up from me.

Ingredients and Subs

Jus-Rol Round & Thin Pizza Crust – You could also use the Family Size for more servings, you’ll just need to eyeball and increase the toppings a bit and follow the baking time on the package!

marinara sauce – pizza sauce, tomato sauce, or tomato paste are all fine as well.

shredded mozzarella cheese – I prefer freshly shredded for that melty cheese pull.

capers – you can find these in the Italian aisle.

cherry tomatoes – fresh diced tomatoes would be okay as well, but cherry tomatoes are preferred.

kalamata olives – kalamata are my favorite olives for puttanesca, but you could also do Castelvetrano.

whole anchovies in olive oil – You can omit if vegetarian or you really want to, BUT I highly recommend trying.

red pepper flakes – omit if you don’t like spice

fresh basil leaves – You could also do flat-leaf Italian parsley

olive oil – I like to reserve good quality olive oil for finishing dishes like this one!

How to Make

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F.
  2. Unroll refrigerated Round & Thin Pizza Crust on enclosed parchment paper and place on a pizza stone or baking sheet. Marinara sauce over dough, leaving 1/2-inch of the border bare. Sprinkle with the mozzarella, then top with capers, cherry tomatoes, and olives. Top with anchovy fillets in a spoke pattern. Sprinkle with red pepper flakes.
  3. Bake until crust is browned, about 15 minutes. Sprinkle with fresh basil and a drizzle of olive oil.

What is Puttanesca?

Traditionally, puttanesca is an Italian spaghetti dish made typically with tomatoes, olive oil, olives, anchovies, chili peppers, capers, and garlic. I chose to take those same flavors and use them to top this amazingly simple pizza!

What do Anchovies taste like?

I for one am a huge anchovy on pizza fan. Actually, I just love anchovies in general. They have a lovely salty, nutty flavor, and are nothing to be scared of. If you’re vegan, you can omit it from the recipe as you’ll still get that salty, briny, umami flavor from the capers and olives.
