Sometimes, I get inspired to make a recipe based on something that I’ve seen on a prepackaged food item. I’ve even been know to peruse the isles of the grocery store to see if certain ingredients jump out to me. In this instance it was a strawberry basil tea bag. I came very close to picking these up at the store, but then I thought,”How delicious would this be with FRESH strawberries and basil?” Obviously I had to test it out and now I’m in LOVE! This strawberry basil green tea is a refreshing drink that would be a hit at any fourth of July party, it’s even Red! This drink is pretty sweet so bear that in mind, but on a hot summer day with plenty of ice….it is a winner. You can prepare the same recipe, but skip blending the strawberries and simple syrup if you would rather have a lighter strawberry flavor and whole pieces of fruit in your drink. Personally, I love the thicker, almost smoothie like consitancy and beautiful color. Happy sipping!
- 8 green tea bags
- 1 pound of fresh strawberries
- 1 cup of water
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1 cup of fresh basil
- Bring 4 cups of water to a boil and add the green tea bags. Let steep for 5 minutes.
- Place strawberries in a bowl.
- Bring water and sugar to a boil in a saucepan, stirring until sugar has completely dissolved. Remove from heat, add basil, and let steep for 10 minutes.
- Strain the simple syrup over the strawberries and discard the basil. Let stand for 25 minutes.
- Blend strawberries and syrup in blender until there are no large pieces and mixture is smooth. Add to your cooled green tea and refridgerate until cold. Serve with lots and lots of ice and enjoy!
