Taste and smell are two of the greatest memory triggers we have. To this day, I can detect the perfume I wore in middle school and be taken back to my most awkward adolescent years, or taste the combination of honey and butter and be transported to Sunday morning breakfasts as a child.
One of the scents that takes me way back is black coffee and sweet caramel. I come from a long line of coffee drinkers and, in my opinion, very good cooks. On any given day I could expect to find something baking, be it at home with my mom, at my grandma’s, or even my great-grandmother’s house.
